It's kind of a nostalgic look back at a childhood。。。 that wasn't mine。 Ok, I own the Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes, but I was much more a fan of Hercule Poirot than Nancy Drew as a child。 Still am, I guess, but this is a fun read as a period piece。 It's not really a whodunnit, more of a "wheresthewill," with a side of danger and thuggery along with mostly almost too saccharinely-wonderful/tragic characters。 Except for the nasty family who might inherit if not for Nancy Drew, of course。 Things a It's kind of a nostalgic look back at a childhood。。。 that wasn't mine。 Ok, I own the Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes, but I was much more a fan of Hercule Poirot than Nancy Drew as a child。 Still am, I guess, but this is a fun read as a period piece。 It's not really a whodunnit, more of a "wheresthewill," with a side of danger and thuggery along with mostly almost too saccharinely-wonderful/tragic characters。 Except for the nasty family who might inherit if not for Nancy Drew, of course。 Things are a little too black and white in this book - no realistically nuanced characters。 I suppose that's considered appropriate for a children's series? I'm not entirely sure I agree。 Nevertheless, enjoyable。 。。。more

My first Nancy Drew book, I really enjoyed it!

Nancy Drew is a Mary Sue type character Where everything goes her way all the time。 It is a interesting beginner mystery type book but follows the standards of the time period in which only “safe and sane” books were allowed。 There is no mention of any type of real illness or disability and the ones who don't conform to the collectivistic ideal in this book are the villains point blank。 It is an easy read and I would recommend it for new readers as a compare and contrast read with a newer young Nancy Drew is a Mary Sue type character Where everything goes her way all the time。 It is a interesting beginner mystery type book but follows the standards of the time period in which only “safe and sane” books were allowed。 There is no mention of any type of real illness or disability and the ones who don't conform to the collectivistic ideal in this book are the villains point blank。 It is an easy read and I would recommend it for new readers as a compare and contrast read with a newer young adult mystery novel。 You can follow along Nancy Drew’s perfect and safe adventure where she searches for clues to find a second and revised will。I personally and not a huge fan of this book but because I read it I feel appreciative of the time period that I live in。 You could really see through this book the things that were expected of women and how they were supposed to be the perfect housewife and always be prim and proper no matter the situation。 I'm a type of person who loves to reread books I like, and this is definitely a book I would not ever reread unless I am teaching a class and do a compare and contrast read。 。。。more
